Su, nurse:
Terminal City gym has helped me get stronger and feel more energetic. I am a 60 year old female who has been active my whole life. I have commuted by bicycle and practised yoga in Vancouver for over 30 years. The weight lifting at Terminal City has improved my yoga practise by having much more upper body strength and cycling is easier through increased leg strength from doing squats. The comfortable atmosphere at Terminal City is relaxed, yet focused and fun with no pressure. I feel a lot more confident in my body and moving the couch when vacuuming is a breeze!

Tara, advocate:
Lifting weights is reliably the best time of my week. Al is great at teaching and coaching proper technique. As a queer, fat, athletic person I love how welcoming and inclusive Al is of a wide diversity of people and bodies. It's pretty amazing the variety of equipment that's available in the Spartan space. In particular I love all the grip implements that Al has. Al makes Terminal City Training a really special gym.

Erin, educator, community worker:
I've been lifting weights since I was 19 years old. I'm 56 now, so that's a LONG time. I was a competitive powerlifter for a few years, and I always loved lifting heavy. I met Al just before he opened Terminal City, after he'd been coaching for a few years. We belonged to the same gym, and he trained people there. I liked his manner, and the way he encouraged people.
A few years after that, I noticed a young woman doing deadlifts in that gym. She was very powerful and her technique was impeccable. I approached her and asked about her training. She told me about Terminal City and said I should look up Al again. I remembered him; the good impression he made, and my training was a bit stalled out, so i did as she suggested.
That was in the fall of 2015. I went to my first session thinking I knew quite a lot about lifting, powerlifting in particular.
But wow. what a difference Al and Terminal City has made! My technique is better, and my repertoire is greater. We have barbells, sure, but also kettlebells, sandbags, kegs with different volumes of water in them, battle ropes, resistance bands, medicine balls, and many many weird and challenging grip-enhancing tools. Its inspiring. Every time I come, I learn more about lifting, humility, relationships, and strange strength esoterica.
The gym is a place to train, and to learn. But it's also a place to belong. There is something for everyone there, mostly the encouragement to set goals and achieve more than you may have imagined you could. Together we are stronger than any one of us alone. Thanks, Al.

Casey, actor, wrestler, community worker:
Al is a great coach, period. I began training with him mid way through 2011 after being inspired by a friend of mine who was becoming incredibly strong through power-lifting and Olympic lifting. I'm a part-time yoga instructor, and have also studied boxing and submission wrestling. I'm 5'7", 148lbs and have been working out in some form or another since I was about 16 years old. Long story short, I love power-lifting. Much like my experience of yoga, I feel like power-lifting is something I'll be doing for the rest of my life. What I enjoy so much about it, is the mental aspect. In the end, all there is is me and the bar that I'm lifting. Al understands that, he understands how to motivate without getting in the way, he doesn't make my training about him. He's encouraging but he's also the voice of reason. He's incredibly humble, knowledgeable and straight forward with his advice. Like I said, a great coach.
Through my training with Al I've discovered a weakness in my right leg that I was completely unaware of. With Al's help I've slowly built up the strength of the inner thigh muscles and now feel far more confident when back-squatting. Every body has their 'weaknesses' for lack of a better word. With power-lifting there's no avoiding them, Al takes interest in these weak-spots and offers great advice on how to improve them.
It's safe to say that I'm stronger than I've ever been and continue to get stronger still.
Thanks Al.

Rika, health researcher:
I have been training with Al for just over a year. I came to him with the goal of transforming myself into a strong athlete. I did not actually think this could be achieved because I have always seen myself as a soft and lazy person. However, Al took me seriously. The most important thing he told me (again and again) is that there is no short cut. It takes work and consistency. He has patiently coached me 4 to 6 days a week to get me where I want to be.
He is unfailing in his support of his athletes and is truly interested in us as individuals. Most importantly for me, he has a healthy respect for all body types. Because of this, he is not the coach for you if your goals are unhealthy for your body or mind. He will encourage you to avoid injury, eat properly and focus on becoming psychologically and physically strong. The gym has been thoughtfully outfitted with equipment, which means there are no gimmicks or frills. Training is private, semi-private or in small groups which is helpful for new athletes who are self-conscious about entering a commercial gym full of jocks.
And have I achieved my training goals? You bet. Only I now have a few more. I have pain and injury issues related to an old herniated disc. Al and I have researched the best ways to train around these kinds of set backs and he frequently sends me articles written from established strength athletes who have persevered in spite of similar issues. Training with Al is one of the best investments I have made in myself.

When I started training with Al, my goal was to be stronger and healthier. A year later, with Al's training in both weight lifting and running, I am the strongest that I have ever been. Al's extensive knowledge and one-on-one guidance have allowed me to push my limits in a safe and welcoming environment. I am a forever client!

Hector, Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor, 2nd & 3rd place US Open 2011:
As a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitor, I'm always looking to stay in the best shape possible. After speaking with Al, I knew that I found someone that could help me accomplish that goal. His training philosophies and instruction helped me get stronger and better conditioned - all of which were critical to my competitive success. Nothing fancy - just plain effective.

Nikolai:
Both the training advice from Al and the environment of the gym have been highly beneficial in my athletic development; and as someone who suffers from both mental illness and a persistent depressive disorder I can testify that a good exercise regimen has been far more beneficial than any medication.

Vanessa, Human Resources:
I began my journey with Terminal City Training about a year ago. I was a dedicated runner who was nursing a few injuries, and yet, I stubbornly refused to relinquish my strict cardio-only regime. To me, running was the only way to attain the fitness results that I wanted, and, in spite of the fact that it was actually causing me physical pain, I was initially very sceptical about incorporating strength training into my routine. Clearly, I needed a bit of guidance, but you know the old adage about not approaching a wild animal caught in a trap, even if only to help, because it will probably bite your face off? Yeah, well, basically that was me. Fortunately, Al doesn’t scare easy.
Over the past year, Al has worked patiently and tirelessly, introducing me to a range of highly effective and beneficial practices which have drastically improved my level of fitness, my confidence and my overall health, both physically and mentally. The techniques that Al has taught me have made me more efficient when working out on my own, and he has been resourceful and responsive whenever I posed a question to him. I have been impressed with the depth and diversity of his knowledge, as well as his passion for developing unique plans that truly reflect the needs and goals of his clients.
When I first started working out with Al, I could barely dead lift a barbell by itself, a mere 45#, and I am now proud to say that I have almost reached my self-set goal of 160# (go me!). I am completely astounded at how much I have achieved in such a short time, and I have absolutely no doubt that it is a direct result of Al’s conscientious, unique and innovative approach to personal training. Thanks, Al!

Jen, Counsellor:
Working with Al has been so rewarding. I have gone to the gym for a few years now but have always had overuse injuries that made me feel stuck despite my enthusiasm and effort. Working with Al has given me the focus and knowledge that I needed to move forward in my workouts. He is able to work on the whole picture - not only physical fitness, but the emotional and mental aspects that keep you from reaching your potential. He is also endlessly patient and encouraging on the days when I need it most. That really is invaluable.

Working with Al has been simultaneously a rewarding and challenging experience. With Al's expert guidance and inexorable patience I have made significant progress in all the areas that we discussed prior to starting the program. If you're looking for a competent, skilled and highly personable trainer than Al and Terminal City Training is the perfect fit for you. Word to the wise, don't fear the sandbag...

Andrea, Graduate Student:
I never thought of myself as the type of person who needed coaching, but I started working with Al at Terminal City after I'd run myself down through a prolonged period of stress and physical inactivity. I had gained weight, I was tired all the time, craved sugar and junk foods and had poor mobility due to aching joints and a weak back. After three months, I feel like I've developed both physical and mental strength in ways I didn't know were a possibility for me. I stand taller, have more energy, and feel better in my body. I sleep and eat well, and I can move freely. Most gratifying and least expected, I have a more positive, resilient approach to my daily life. Al is a rigourous yet patient trainer. His calm good humour is balanced by a natural gravitas which encourages you to treat yourself seriously as an athlete, no matter your history or current physical condition. I would recommend Al to anyone who wants to be stronger and healthier, but especially to people who are intimidated by the idea of trying a more intense workout regime and being coached. You owe it to yourself to try working with Al.

Yvette, Roller Derby Competitor:
I started training with Al as a way to cross-train off the roller derby track. Al puts a lot of thought into each workout, and is also great at improvising on the fly. He takes into account my injuries, my roller derby schedule, and my thoughts about where I think I could improve. He researches the sport and adapts workouts to my needs. And I appreciate how he considers the mental aspect as much as the physical.
Al encourages constantly and pushes me right to the edge at each workout. And then he breaks out the sledgehammers and makes us bearwalk and crabwalk! Al works us hard, and he keeps workouts fun.
