Bio - Al Heinemann
I have a varied coaching, athletic, and academic background.
Last year I coached two athletes to qualification for the 2011 Classic Nationals of the Canadian Powerlifting Union (IPF). This is the unequipped or "raw" division of the CPU. Both athletes won their respective divisions in the B.C. Powerlifting Championships.
I am trained as a Club Coach for Olympic-style weightlifting under the auspices
of the National Coaching Certification Program (Canada). I am currently working towards developing athletes who will
compete in weightlifting and to this end I have formed a training group and team that practices
out of the Terminal City Barbell Club in East Vancouver.
I am a certified Personal Trainer Specialist with Can-Fit-Pro. I specialize in training individuals and small groups in strength and power development and all-round athleticism. My clients include both non-athletes and those involved in a variety of sports.
I have trained in a broad spectrum of classical and modern martial arts
including those of Japanese, Chinese, Filipino and western origin. My recent
commitment in this regard is to a classical Japanese school of grappling and
weaponry.
While undertaking my honours degree in English literature at the University of
Victoria I became involved in training with the varsity cross-country team,
while specializing in road-racing. From this experience I went on to work for
several years in a premiere running specialty-store where I immersed myself in
training and the methodologies of training distance runners. At the same time I
was still immersed in martial arts practice and study. My martial arts research
exposed me to contemporary and traditional strength and conditioning practices.
As a young man of seventeen I entered the Canadian Armed Forces and underwent
basic training and infantry trade training as a reservist.
I now live in East Vancouver with my young family. Here I strive, in my
capacity as a strength & conditioning coach, personal trainer and running
coach, to do everything I can to help my clients achieve their performance,
fitness and life goals.
